Kathy Cherry

Ceramics are clay artworks which are fired and hardened to turn them into ceramic form. Traditionally ceramic articles were made by shaping a clay mixture of different minerals. Once the desired shape was achieved, the articles were fired in a high temperature kiln. The modern art movement in ceramics is experimental. They do not necessarily contain clay. Ceramics can be categorized into two types – Industrial and Fine art. Kathy Cherry is a contemporary US artist, who specializes in hand built ceramic works.  She graduated from Arizona State University with a BFA in Ceramics and has an MA in Arts Education. She was an active contributor to the Phoenix arts community in the 70’s and 80’s. Since then she has been working as an art teacher for elementary students. She creates her designs in her own studio. Some of them are whimsical creations whereas others have a story of their own to tell.

The different themes used for the handbuilt ceramic creations of Kathy Cherry are undecided, abstract and figurative. She uses a mixture of vibrant and sober colors in her works. The effects created by the juxtaposition of contrasting colors make her artwork one of a kind. The handbuilt ceramic creations of Kathy Cherry use abstract designs to portray common objects. There are many sites where her designs can be bought. A few of her well known works are Wicked, Telephone, Purpled Hand, Fish and Searching Hands.
