Defining Crafts of Coastal India





Along the huge coastline of India flourish multihued crafts that lend uniqueness to the composite land of India.


West Bengal
The coastal State of West Bengal is known for its crafts like metalwork, pottery, mat making, jute work, baluchari, muslin, kantha and leather and stone work.

The city of Hoogly is known for its folk toys, chikan embroidery, cane and bamboo furniture and jute articles while Howarah is known for doll making, images of gods and goddesses, and decorative fans.

Orissa

The sandstone or soapstone work employing traditional technique is notable in Orissa. While the Appliqué work, sholapith craft, patachitras, and papier mache items are other significant craft items.

Andhra Pradesh Andhra Pradesh is famous for its kalamkari-resist printed craft and priceless work of gold covering.



Tamil Nadu & Pondicherry

These States are known for their terracotta, papier mache, plaster of Paris, and bronze casting crafts. Besides these, cane weaving, hand printed textiles, horn work, metal work; jewelry, seashell items and musical instruments of the State are also popular.

Kerala

The craft of ivory carving has brought immense fame to the State of Kerala. The craft items of the State like ivory elephants, figures of Buddha and Christ, bookmarks, cigarette holders, and pen stands are excellent gift items. Besides these, the State also has a rich tradition of woodcarving.
