Toy Making Tradition

Toy making tradition in India is as old as its history. Children from the Indus valley civilization used to play with small clay toys. A large variety of materials are used to make traditional toys and dolls. Clay, papier-mâché, coir, leather, cloth etc are used in making traditional toy and dolls. Painted wooden toys from Tirupati are popular so are the stuffed leather toys from Madhya pradesh and Karnataka.

Lacquered wood toys from Gujarat and Rajasthan are also popular.

Madhya pradesh is well known for its range of Papier-mâché toys.
