Jute Sector plays very important role in Indian Textile Industry. Jute is called Golden fiber and after cotton it is the cheapest fiber available. Jute, the golden fiber has gained immence popularity around the globe because of its biodegradable character. Indian Jute Industry is the largest producer of raw jute and jute products in the world. India is the second largest exporter of jute goods in world. This sector is one of the major source of employment and supports the livelihood of 40 lakh farm families and 4 lakh workers.

The total Jute Mills in India are 78. Out of these 61 in West Bengal, 3 in Bihar, 3 in Uttar Pradesh, 7 in Andhra Pradesh, 1 in Assam, Tripura, Chattisgarh, and Orissa. The exports of jute goods are between Rs. 1100-1200 crores. The production of raw jute varies between 90-180 lakh (180 kg. each). The Domestic consumption is 13.5-14.5 lakh MT. In 2005-06 the production was 85 bales and estimated production is 105 lakh bales for jute season 2007.
