Art Print

Art Print making is the process of making artworks by printing, normally on paper. Art print is a precise reproduction of an artist's original painting, which has captured the stunning and vibrant colors of the original artwork. Art print process is capable of producing multiple copies of the same piece, which is called a print. Each copy is known as an impression. Art painting or drawing, on the other hand, create a unique original piece of artwork. Art prints are created from a single original surface, known technically as a matrix.

Art print is created not directly on paper but through an indirect process of transformation. Firstly a composition takes place on another surface and then the transfer occurs when a sheet of paper, placed in contact with the surface.

Art print includes some common types of matrices. Such as,

  • Plates of metal, usually made of copper or zinc for engraving
  • Stone, for lithography,
  • Blocks of wood for woodcuts and linoleum for linocuts and many more.

Each art print is considered an original work of art, not a copy. Works printed from a single plate create an edition. Art Prints may also be published in book form, as Artists' Books. A single art print could be the product of one or multiple techniques.
