Rembrandt Harmenszoon Van Rijn was born on October 4, 1669 in Amsterdam. He is generally considered one of the greatest painters in European art history. Van was also a talented printmaker and made many drawings. His contributions to art came in a period that historians call the Dutch Golden Age.

Van art is characterized by

  • A mastery of chiaroscuro.
