Woodcraft Table

The seemingly boring wooden table is really a creative artist's dream, for there are innumerable ways in which it could be decorated.

While making a woodcraft table, the first choice the craftsman makes is the wood he wishes to use. In India, the options are aplenty. Depending on the region in which the furniture item is being made, the craft wood is chosen. For instance, walnut wood is popular in Kashmir , while sandalwood is preferred in South India. Some of the popular varieties used to make wood furniture in India, are:

  • Walnut
  • Mango
  • Cane
  • Rosewood
  • Sandalwood
  • Teak

Thereafter, the crafting begins. The artist has to decide what the shape and size of his table will be and use appropriate tools to make it. Square, rectangle, and circular wooden tabletops are as popular as oval and hexagonal shaped ones. The table could have single stand on which it rests, or there could be two, three or our legs that support it.

Once the table parts have been cut, they are ready to be decorated. Indian furniture is very diverse. Designs and patterns vary in the different wood crafting regions of the country. The woodcraft table could be carved, painted, or simply polished. The embellishment depends on the region the wood table is being crafted in. For example, the Sankheda furniture of Gujarat boasts of woodcraft tables that have bright colorful motifs painted on them. The walnut wood furniture of Kashmir is ornately carved.

Crafting wooden tables is central to the Indian furniture making tradition , and these tables are used for a variety of purposes, to fulfill which they are crafted accordingly.
